A full hour before the conference started! So you may have missed this diamond in the rough. Not to worry as it can be found in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210511095720\/http:\/\/www.discoveryeducation.com\/community\/den-fall-virtcon-archive.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">archive<\/a>. However, you should not let another min go by before you watch it\u2026No really\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210511095720\/http:\/\/new.livestream.com\/DEN\/events\/2476850\">go now\u00a0<\/a>I will wait\u2026<\/p>\n<p>16 min later\u2026<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Wasn\u2019t that fantastic. I hope your are as excited by it as I am. \u00a0Just in case you did not get a chance to take notes I did:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210511095720\/http:\/\/code.org\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/codeinfographicupdate.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"codeinfographicupdate\" src=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210511095720im_\/http:\/\/blog.discoveryeducation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/codeinfographicupdate.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" \/><\/a>The hour of code takes place during\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210511095720\/http:\/\/csedweek.org\/participate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Computer Science Education Week<\/a>\u00a0This is recognized week by congress. \u00a0You have till December 9th to get all the planning done for this event. \u00a0I have already asked my principal about it and we are beginning the planning stage. A lot of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210511095720\/http:\/\/csedweek.org\/school\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">materials<\/a>\u00a0have already been created for you on the website including a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210511095720\/http:\/\/csedweek.org\/sites\/csedweek\/files\/Hour%20of%20Code%20Handout%20for%20Schools.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">participation guide<\/a>\u00a0you can print out. \u00a0The goal is to get every student exposed to a one hour introduction to Computer Science. \u00a0Why would you want to do that? Since a picture is worth 1000 words a video must be worth a\u00a0googol \u00a0(not a spelling mistake\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210511095720\/http:\/\/blog.discoveryeducation.com\/blog\/2012\/06\/09\/why-is-google-not-spelled-googol-the-correct-spelling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google is spelled wrong<\/a>) of words. \u00a0I posted the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210511095720\/https:\/\/blog.discoveryeducation.com\/blog\/2013\/11\/11\/den-fall-virtcon-the-hour-of-code\/#Video\">video<\/a>\u00a0at the bottom. \u00a0Only 5% of schools teach Computer Science where as 33% of schools teach AP Calculus. \u00a0Code.org was founded a year ago by the Partov brothers\u00a0\u00a0to bring awareness to the serious issue of CS illiteracy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210511095720\/http:\/\/code.org\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Their Mission statement<\/a>: \u201cCode.org is a non-profit dedicated to growing computer science education by making it available in more schools, and increasing participation by women and underrepresented students of color. Our vision is that every student in every school should have the opportunity to learn computer programming. We believe computer science should be part of the core curriculum in education, alongside other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses, such as biology, physics, chemistry and algebra.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As you read look at the stats infographic on the left. In the US \u00a035 of 50 \u00a0states do not \u00a0count CS as a graduation requirements for Math or Science Credit.(including \u00a0my home state of PA).<\/p>\n<p>If you, a student, or even your grandmother wants to learn to code goto Code.org and explore. \u00a0They have<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210511095720\/http:\/\/code.org\/learn\/scratch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0tutorial apps<\/a>\u00a0right on the site that you can learn in.
