Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of Mathematics (PCTM) Annual Conference 11/1/2013

Next week is the Annual Conference for the PCTM.  I plan to be there on Thursday November 7th.  This is a great chance to see what is going on in the area of Mathematics.  The program includes keynote address from Dr. Johnna Bolyard, West Virginia University and Dr. Fran Arbaugh, Penn State University.  Dr. Bolyard will be presenting on “The Standards for Mathematical Practice:Business as Usual or a mathematical Revolution?” and Dr. Arbaugh will be presenting on “Think Math!!”

8:30 a.m. – Opening Session – Welcome from PCTM President Keynote by  Dr. Johnna Bolyard, Grand Ballroom.

9:45 a.m. – 10:35 a.m. Seasons 2 General

  • Steve Williams, Lock Haven University of PA
  • Math Teachers to the Core: Are We Ready for This?
  • CCSSM: Teaching to the Common Core requires deep knowledge of the math we are teaching. Three of my “new favorite problems” will be examined to help teachers become more competent in the era of the Common Core.


10:45 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Snowflake General

  • Becky Piscitella, Richland HS, Johnstown
  • Jade Zatek, recent graduate UPJ
  • Grading Policies in Secondary Classrooms that Encourage and Reward Learning
  • A variety of nontraditional grading policies will be presented. Participants will: identify their primary learning objective, explore nontraditional grading via classroom examples, understand the research that supports alternative assessment, and review examples of student feedback.

12:45 p.m. – 1:35 p.m. Seasons 5 CCSS

  • John Fitsioris, Carnegie Learning, Inc
  • Common Core State Standards for Mathematical Practice with a Big Bang!
  • Participants will: discuss, analyze, and summarize the Practice Standards using multiple representations: verbal, written and picture. We will also analyze short video clips of a well-known sit com that display meaningful and entertaining connections to the Performance Standards.

1:45 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Evergreen Algebra


  • Kelly Brent, Carlisle Area High School
  • Marian Avery, Great Valley High School
  • Get students ready for Keystone Algebra I
  • Looking for insight into the level of difficulty and types of questions that students will need to be ready for in order to pass the Keystone Algebra I assessment? Come explore and experience instructional strategies and activities that will help students reach a deeper level of understanding of concepts.
